Loy Krathong
The full moon of the twelth lunar month marks a special day in the Thai calendar, throughout the Thai kingdom hundreds of thousands of decorated krathong (traditional banana leaf floats with lighted candles are released on the rivers, seas and waterways in a traditional ritual called Loy Krathong, the festival of lights. Its one of Thailands oldest traditions. A Krathong is a float made from basic materials that can be found around the villages, to reflect the simplicity of life. Shaped like a lotus in full bloom or the shape of a swan, chedis(stupas) and mount Meru from Buddhist mythology. Krathong floats are more popular in the shape of lotus blossoms. Thousands of tiny candlelit floats drifting downstream is a spectacular sight. Most villages across Thailand celerbrate this event and its normally accompanied by firework displays, cultural performances and folk dancing. The belief i sthat by setting a krathing adrift on water one can cast away one's grief, misery and ill fortunes. Superstitious people will go as far as plaicing tufts of hair of clipped finger nails into the krathong in the hope of removing a spell of bad luck of misfortune. Cions are also placed into the krathongs as offerings... Young couples in love use the Loy Krathong time to make romantic wishes for success, happiness and long love. |
