Religion

Buddhism

One of the strongest Buddhist country's in the world is The Kingdom of Thailand. Theravada Buddhism is the national religion which is a branch of the Hinayana Buddhism, almost 90 % of all Thai people practice this religion. The Thai people live peace, generosity, tolerance and search for enlightenment which all means that the daily life of a Thai person is approached with happiness, respect and a calm nature.

Meditation plays an important role in Buddhism keeping that state of mind that involves peace, generosity, tolerance and the search for enlightenment. Meditation is a popular and practical aspect of Buddhism. Essential for inner peace.

Buddhism in Thailand is the main religion but Christianity, Hinduism and Islam are all practised to a lesser extent throughout Thailand, and are allowed to flourish and coexist alongside Buddhism.

Visitors and tourists not interested in the religious aspects can enjoy an introduction at many centres and temples across the country. Buddhist temples always welcome you.

Buddhist monks in Thailand are highhly respected members of the Thai communities. Special areas are reserved for them at many locations including places at the airports and on buses. The public show them great respect in many ways. In towns and villages, the temple (wat) is the heart of social and religious life.
